Honda Malaysia today introduced the Stream RSZ, and the vehicle replaces the current bog-standard version that was launched in Nov 2007.

Mechanically, everything's all but the same in the 1.8 i-VTEC-powered seven-seater, but the updated variant - which has been selling in Singapore for a good bit now - features more in the way of bling, with a full bodykit, a redesigned RSZ front grille and new 17-inch alloys wheels leading the way.

Elsewhere, the front end lights get a reworking too, and the new lamps are auto HID (high intensity discharge) units with smoke-finish covers. Also new, the fog lamps, and let's not forget the inclusion of a sunroof on this one.

Inside, you now have a more refined interior in the way of material, paddle shifters, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a seat-side armrest for the driver and for added convenience, a passenger seat under-seat storage tray as new items on the list.

Atsushi Fujimoto, managing director and chief executive officer of Honda Malaysia said that ''the refinements accomplished in the Stream RSZ show that we are on the pulse of the current lifestyle trend, where style and practicality in an automobile are expected to come hand in hand.''

The Stream RSZ comes in four colours - besides the Premium White Pearl, Honda Malaysia is introducing three new colours with the vehicle, and they are Crystal Black Pearl, Polished Metal Metallic and New Red Pearl.

The outgoing standard Stream managed to sell just over 1,600 units up until Jan from the time it was launched, but Honda Malaysia is being a little more conservative with this one, given the market conditions - the company has targeted a modest sales figure of 350 units for the vehicle this year.

The Stream RSZ is priced at RM155,980, on-the-road, with insurance. Oh, and before you rush out to the showrooms, you might want to know that the Stream RSZ will be available at all authorised Honda showrooms nationwide only from Feb 26 onwards.

Proton Packs More Performance in the New Satria Neo CPS

PROTON today unveiled an improved and sportier Satria Neo hatchback fitted with a Campro CPS (Cam Profile Switching) engine, which promises enhanced performance and style. This new variant (2nd Generation Satria) is now powered by a Campro CPS DOHC 16V engine which packs more power and offers better responsiveness for drivers desiring performance.

The Satria Neo, introduced in 2006, has won many hearts both locally and internationally and has been given accolades such as the “coolest” car to be produced by PROTON.

“The Satria Neo is known as a performance-driven car. What we have done is to enhance the Neo by making it more powerful, responsive and attractive by giving it an improved engine and a sportier look," said PROTON Holdings Berhad Managing Director, Dato' Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir during the launch held today at the Asian Pacific Auction Centre in Subang.

This new Satria Neo CPS will run the latest engine in the Proton line-up, the 1.6 litre Campro CPS. This engine utilizes two ingenious technologies, CPS (Cam Profile Switching) and VIM (Variable Intake Manifold technology), to give higher power outputs and rapid response, whilst maintaining a fuel efficient delivery. These two technologies give the best of both worlds by combining the characteristics of two different engines in one compact package. The usual reduction in torque caused by high-lift cams is offset by the long intake runner, whilst the short runner works by helping the engine generate more power at higher speeds. All this technology translates to 120PS at 6,500 rpm, and 150Nm at 4500 rpm, giving the Satria Neo CPS, one of the most powerful engines in its segment. This power increase doesn’t come at the expense of the environment as this new engine meets the latest European emission regulations.

On the inside, the Satria Neo CPS features a Lotus Motorsport inspired minimalist Interior Design now enhanced with a sporty red and black leather upholstery and door inserts. The interior finishing is further enhanced by a new leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob.

The Campro CPS engine is finally in the Proton Satria Neo, something that many have been eagerly waiting for. The CPS is essentially a Campro engine with a few updates and a variable valve lift system called CPS as well as a variable intake manifold (VIM) system. These additions help push up power to 125 PS at 6,500rpm and 150Nm of torque at 4,500rpm, figures which are up from the standard Campro’s 110hp and 148Nm.

The car’s front and rear track has also been updated. While the Proton Satria Neo had a front and rear track of 1,470mm for both, the Satria Neo CPS H-Line has a narrower front track at 1,467mm and a wider rear track 1,483mm.
We didn’t managed to get hold of a Proton engineer to ask this question but we did manage to ask a member of Proton’s Race Rally Research (R3) team who said the change was made because Proton found the standard Neo suffered from slight oversteer, so this change was made to induce a slight understeer to improve handling. Anyway either way as a result of the large wheel arches, the wheels looks kind of lost inside them at certain angles.

As for aesthetics, as you can see there’s a new bodykit and more prominent flared wheel arches that are inspired from the old Satria GTI’s design. The alloy wheels are of the same 16 inch size as the M-Line but feature a different design that looks like a carbon copy of Advanti Racing’s MEDUSA design but without the two-tone design - perhaps it’s licensed or “inspired”. On the interior, the dashboard is now of a darker shade with red lighting on the various air conditioning controls and auto gear position indicators, has a different door trim design, some new trim around the gear shifter area, and leather seats in a black and red combination similiar to the GEN2 CPS.

The following are the prices for the new Proton Satria Neo CPS, available in only two colours which are unique to the CPS - solid white and tranquility black.

CPS is only available for the high line model, so the lite and M-line models retain the regular Campro. Unfortunately this is the old original Campro engine, without the new IAFM systems in the Saga, Persona and GEN2. The CPS system has also been tweaked with this version of the Campro engine, so the high lift cam profile activation point has been revised. However I’m not sure what is the purpose of activating it later.

VIM switches between a long intake manifold at low RPMs and a short intake manifold at higher RPMs. According to Proton, a longer intake manifold is used at low RPMs to achieve slower air flow; this promotes better mixing with fuel. The short intake manifold allows more air in faster. This is beneficial at high RPMs. The CPS system uses a switching tappet and a trilobe camshaft to switch between two different cam profiles, one with low valve lift and another with high valve lift.

TOKYO, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Honda Motor Co. announced Thursday that it will launch new gas-electric hybrid car "Insight" Friday.

The Insight is priced between 1.89 million yen (21,000 U.S. dollars) and 2.21 million yen (24,500 U.S. dollars), cheaper than its bigger rival Toyota's Prius, which is sold at the minimum price of 2.33 million yen (25,800 U.S. dollars).

The new hybrid, however, covers 30 km per liter of gasoline, against 35.5 kilometers for Toyota's Prius.

The second largest automaker in Japan aims to sell 5,000 Insight cars per month.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage for Geneva

Aston Martin will premiere the V12 Vantage coupe at the Geneva motor show next month. Based on the hugely successful V8 Vantage, the car follows on the V12 Vantage concept unveiled at the opening of the Aston Martin Design Studio in Dec 2007.

It will be powered by a normally-aspirated 6.0l V12, which features a number of enhancements over the standard 6.0l V12 found in the DB9. These include a ‘by-pass’ engine air intake port that opens up at 5,500rpm, a revised induction system and re-profiled air inlet ports that further improve airflow into the combustion chamber to improve performance.

The block offers 510bhp and 570Nm of torque, and performance figures include a 305kmh top speed and 0-100kmh time of 4.2secs. The car will be available with a six-speed manual transmission, with the gearbox utilising a transaxle configuration to aid weight distribution, which is 51:49, in case you'd like to know.
Externally, the care features body revisions to enhance the vehicle’s dynamics, with knowledge gleaned from the N24 race car programme. Among these, a revised front splitter, bonnet louvres and new side sills derived from the N24 race car; this channels air towards the rear of the car rather than under it, reducing rear-end lift.

Elsewhere, there's a more pronounced boot ‘flip’ and a new rear carbon fibre diffuser works in tandem with a redesigned rear underfloor tochannel air through the new high-capacity oil cooler and also maintain an area of low pressure under the rear of the car, helping to increase down force and aiding grip.

Inside, the instrument cluster has been revised, with clearer dials, and there's plenty of lightweight material on call - the door pulls are made from carbon fibre, and there's heavy use of Alcantara throughout the cabin to help save valuable weight.

If you want to whop off a massive 17kg, then the specially-made - and optional, of course - carbon fibre and Kevlar composite seats are it.

Kit-wise, the rear suspension has been modified, with a more compact dual-rate spring design, in order to accommodate a wider wheel and tyre combination, improving grip and traction. The ride height is lowered by 15mm, while the spring rates have been stiffened by 45% and the anti-roll bars are 15% (front) and 75% (rear) stiffer than the standard car.

Among the parts inventory are diamond-turned forged 19-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels, with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres specifically designed for the car, as well as Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brakes, featuring 398mm front and 360mm discs and six-piston front and four-piston rear callipers, as standard fitment.

The car also features a revised Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system offering three modes of operation - switched on, a ‘track mode’ which raises the manner and threshold at which the system intervenes, and switched off completely.

The V12 Vantage will be built at AM’s global headquarters in Gaydon in the UK alongside the DBS, DB9 and V8 Vantage model lines. Production will be limited to between just 300-500 examples per year, and deliveries of the car are expected to commence during the third quarter this year, with prices to be confirmed in Geneva.

New Ford FOCUS Launched in Malaysia

Auto ConneXion has launched the facelifted Ford Focus, and the C307 gets a revised exterior and an upgraded interior, along with some new features thrown in for good measure. Both the Focus Sport hatchback and Focus Ghia sedan are now powered by the 143bhp and 185Nm 2.0l Duratec engine, which continues unrevised, as is the four-speed automatic tranny with the Sport Sequential Shift. Previously, the Ghia sedan came in 1.8l form. Externally, the revised Focus gets a complete new front end - there's a new bumper, bonnet, upper grille (replete with a larger blue oval badge) and headlamps, as well as front fenders with meatier, bolder arch bulges.

At the back on the hatch, a revised, larger windscreen translates into a more pronounced horizontal contour line, and the Ford badge is now positioned lower and is incorporated into a liftgate moulding. Also new, a body coloured roof spoiler, rear bumper and long, clear tail lamps.

Elsewhere, the exterior door mirrors have been enlarged, and the side mirror housings now feature integrated side indicators.

Mechanically, the rear track is now slightly wider, the result of a new range of alloy wheels with additional offset developed specifically for the facelift. Here, both sedan and hatch run 16-inch wheels, with 205/55 R16 rubbers.

Inside, the emphasis on revisions have been on improving the quality of materials and enhancing comfort levels. The evidence is clear to see and feel. Either in black or dark dusk grey, the soft-touch dash pad as well as soft-touch upper door trims contrast beautifully against a tan-coloured inner roof lining to lighten the interior visually.

The driver now sees large-face tachometer and speedometer set deeply into individual binnacles, and positioned above are small-face water temperature and fuel gauges, each surrounded by a silver bezel.

A revised centre stack and redesigned window and mirror switches accompany new intuitive controls for air-conditioning, heater and ventilation system. At night, the centre stack controls are illuminated in soft red light, which is more soothing compared to the stark white of the first generation C307.

A new premium centre console has been designed with an emphasis on improved comfort and function. It features a moveable soft armrest which slides forward 80mm, two cup holders with butterfly lids, a coin holder and a card holder.

Dual-zone air conditioning, six-way power adjustable driver's seat, a two-DIN MP3/six-disc CD changer/six speaker audio system (with an auxiliary input) and a leather interior on the Ghia sedan (fabric on the Sport hatch) round off the mod con list.
Colours common to both variants are Diamond White, Panther Black and Moondust Silver, with unique shades being Racing Blue for the hatch and Infra Red and Ocean for the sedan.

The fully-imported Focus models are available at all 26 Ford showrooms nationwide, priced at RM113,897 for the five-door Sport hatchback and RM112,897 for the four-door Ghia sedan (on-the-road without insurance, Peninsular Malaysia).

It’s the new year for 2009, and seems like local car manufacturer, Proton has started their development for a new market, the MPV segment.

The photos below reveal what seems like the upcoming new MPV car from Proton, which share almost the same exterior with Taiwanese Luxgen MPV.

The new Proton MPV are rumored to be equiped with a 1.6 CamPro engine, with the price range of not exceding RM75,000, excluding road tax and insurance. This will be fitted with 15″ rim as standard, with either manual and auto transmission.

Looking at a Toyota Avanza 1.5 (A) selling at RM 75,600, Proton needs to set a competitive pricing to compete with existing MPV manufacturers.

The speed cluster looks futuristic and sporty with its red colour background.

Center console looks pretty standard with minimum buttons. Radio player comes with red/orange theme which complements the speed cluster very well.

Steering has a strong Honda Civic design in it, and volume up/down, track fwd/rwd button are well within reach. A phone button were spotted also, this might suggest the car comes with bluetooth support?

Nissan has announced a new limited-production GT-R SpecV model, which goes on sale at seven specially selected Nissan dealers throughout Japan on Feb 2. The GT-R SpecV is targeted specifically at enthusiast drivers who desire race car-level performance in a street-legal vehicle - the new SpecV model includes unique body, interior and performance equipment and modifications.

These include new exterior features include a carbon fibre rear spoiler, a carbon fibre grille, and carbon fibre brake ducts. The SpecV is available exclusively in an Ultimate Black Opal (RP) body colour.

Inside, the SpecV's unique two-seat interior (non-SpecV GT-R models also include a two-place rear seat) offers special Recaro carbon fibre bucket seats, while carbon fibre insets embellish the rear center storage box, instrument panel and other trim areas.

Performance is enhanced with a new high gear boost control device, which momentarily increases boost of the engine's twin turbochargers for greater torque in the intermediate-to-high speed ranges. Other modifications include a titanium-coated exhaust system and carbon-ceramic brakes.

The GT-R SpecV is also equipped with lightweight, racing-style forged aluminium wheels that were developed for this model and have been sold by Nissan Motorsports International (NISMO) since Sept last year.

Impul Grand Livina Nissan is spicing up the popular Nissan Grand Livina 7-seater MPV with this new edition that features accessories from Impul. Called the Nissan Grand Livina Tuned by Impul, it is fitted with a bodykit comprising of a new front grille, lips for the front and rear, side skirts, and an Impul rear wing spoiler.

The Impul Blast II exhaust muffler system is also available and this is made of high-quality stainless steel with a polished finish. It is said to improve engine response and emits a sporty note which should delight the driver.

Like the Impul Latio, the Impul Grand Livina can also be ordered with Impul alloy wheels (Aura SX-10) with locally-sourced Dunlop Formula D1 205/45R17 tyres. Mr Khoo, Operations Manager for the Impul business at ETCM, said that quite a number of Impul Latio buyers opt to take the wheels as the design is quite exclusive and appealing.

As with the Impul Latio, the accessories for the Impul Grand Livina can be ordered at the time of purchase of a new vehicle. This means that the entire cost – RM10,500 more than a standard Grand Livina – can be included in the H-P loan. That adds a bit more to the instalment each month, of course, but would be a lot easier than having to come out with that much money as a lump sum, which is what you would have to do if you bought from an accessories shop.

The Mugen is powered by the same 2.0 liter inline four-cylinder engine that propels the stock Si. The 16-valve double-overhead cam unit produces 197 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque -- not all that impressive until you look further into the figures. Horsepower doesn't peak until 7800 rpm; torque until 6100 rpm. That means that in order to get the most out of the Mugen, you have to really rev it up and use that big tach to make sure that you're running in the powerband. The engine isn't shy about letting you know when it's happy. There's a spike in power as you approach the peak. It almost feels like a turbocharger kicks in, the spike is so strong. If you shift the six-speed manual gearbox later than you would on most cars, you get great rushes of acceleration from the Mugen. A freer flowing exhaust system rewards you with incredible music from the engine, and a happy feeling follows.

Getting the power to the ground is accomplished with front-wheel drive. There's just a hint of torque steer (the tendency of front-wheel drive cars to pull to one side under heavy acceleration), but nothing scary. The Mugen suspension is stiffer and tighter than a stock Si's, which makes for a slightly less comfortable ride on a day-to-day basis. The tradeoff is definitely worth it -- the Mugen handles like a razor, responding beautifully to every steering input with great feedback and road feel.

Intellectually, I know that the Mugen is the same car as the Civic Si, but when you add up the whole package -- the look, the feel, the sound -- the Mugen feels a whole lot faster and cooler.

Hardcore New Impreza WRX STI Reveals All

Subaru has at last revealed details of its hardcore new Impreza WRX STI which is substantially different to the non-turbo five-door models now being delivered to first customers.

And with a heavily-revised new 296 bhp turbocharged 2.5 liter 'boxer' engine, totally new platform and suspension plus even more advanced symmetrical all-wheel drive system, the World Rally Championship look-alike is sure to satisfy Subaru traditionalists.

At the rear, four exhaust pipes twinned in pairs at either side of the body not only give a distinctive look but reduce exhaust air-flow resistance by 38 per cent, increasing power and reducing noise.

Comfort With Agility

The new Impreza WRX STI boasts a much plusher interior than before, offering leather/Alcantara-covered sports seats as standard with Recaro seats as an option. Curtain airbags are standard and the audio system has been upgraded.

The braking system has been developed in conjunction with Italian specialist, Brembo, and features four-pot calipers at the front and twin-pot at the rear - both ventilated discs.

A multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control System allows the driver to select the best setting for the prevalent road conditions. For example, it can be turned off altogether or set to 'Traction' which delays artificial interference.

More Power, More Driver Involvement

The award-winning 2.5 liter horizontally-opposed 'boxer' engine benefits from a thorough revision which includes a larger and more efficient intercooler which increases power.

The new STI also boasts stronger low to mid-speed torque thanks to variable-valve timing for the intake and exhaust system and a fast-warm catalytic converter for reduced emissions.

Power is now 296 bhp at 6,000 rpm with torque of 300 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm.

The much-praised six-speed manual transmission has been revised, with a shorter-throw gear-change and lighter movements, especially from neutral to 1st and 1st to 2nd gear thanks to a revised synchromesh.

A firm favorite with existing STI owners, the Driver's Control Centre Differential has been improved, giving even more choice of handling characteristics.

The DCCD is operated via a switch in the centre console, allowing the driver to manually select the torque distribution front to rear, reverting to automatic mode every time the ignition is switched off.

For example, he or she can choose between having a sharper cornering turn-in or more stable straight-line running.

In Manual Mode, the driver can adjust the front to rear torque distribution through varying degrees to suit different road conditions such as loose gravel or soft snow.

Now, for the new Impreza WRX STI, the DCCD switch also allows the selection of three different types of 'Auto' Mode.

1: Auto Mode is selected when the engine is started and covers most road conditions.
2: Auto+ Mode places the emphasis on traction for slippery roads, sharing out the torque more evenly between all four wheels and enhancing straight-line stability.
3: Auto- Mode increases agility by enhancing steering response through less torque-split interference.

Proton Gen.2 To Be Assembled In Iran

TEHRAN, Dec 23 (Bernama) -- Proton Holdings Bhd's Gen.2 model will be assembled in Iran from April 2009 in a deal with a local partner.

Proton and Zagross Khodro inked an agreement here Tuesday for the supply of automotive parts that allows the latter to assemble the Gen.2 through a completely-knocked-down (CKD) arrangement at its assembly plant in Borujerd city, southwest of Iran.

The signing was witnessed by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who is on a four-day official visit to Iran.

Currently, Proton is exporting completely-built-up (CBU) Gen.2 to this country of over 70 million people.

This is the third of a series of agreements aimed at enabling Zagross, Proton's sole distributor in Iran, to assemble the Gen.2.

Signing the dotted line for Proton was its managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir while Zagross was represented by its managing director, Siroos Gholami.

Also present were Proton chairman Datuk Mohammed Azlan Hashim and Zagross chairman Dariush Gholami.

The previous two agreements were on licensing and technical assistance and purchase of equipment.

"This agreement signifies Proton's continued commitment to the vast Iranian market and is part of its overall export market strategy," said Mohammed Azlan.

He also disclosed that Proton, Malaysia's first car manufacturer, would open an office in Iran in March 2009.

With the CKD operation in Iran, Proton will be able to price its cars more competitively in the local market and more importantly improve on its after-sales service in the country, the company said in a statement.

The collaboration between Proton and Zagross began in 2001 when the latter became the sole assembler and distributor of the Proton Wira in this Islamic republic.

Zagross had previously imported CBU units of Proton cars into Iran, a market viewed as a potential for Proton in view of its large population.

Established in 1996, Zagross is the largest private automotive company in Iran with the capability of selling 50,000 cars a year.

The new Nautica SUV which was launched mid of year 2008 signals a new phase in the evolution of Perodua. This is the first time that Perodua is not building its own model and instead importing it as a completely built-up unit (CBU) from Japan, a move that critics say is a departure from its original mission and also not appropriate for a national car company.

Perodua estimates that the successor to the Kembara would draw about 200 buyers a month at most and while making 2,400 units a year locally is possible, the question is whether it will be worth the investment and whether it will be a CKD assembly approach or manufacturing (which means stamping body panels). There are companies which do assemble less than 3,000 units a year but their plants are geared towards smaller volumes than what Perodua today produces.
The first thing most people will remark is that the Nautica looks like the Toyota Rush and yes, it is a shorter version. From various conversations with Perodua, Daihatsu and Toyota engineers, the Daihatsu BeGo/Terios from which the Nautica is derived is the ‘standard’ wheelbase model and Toyota adapted the platform to use for the Rush for Asean in order to get a 3-row SUV (and also uses the same platform for the Avanza).

Dimensional differences are therefore visually noticeable since the Rush has to accommodate three rows of seats. The wheelbase is almost 100 mm longer while the body is about 300 mm longer but the width is the same for both models. However, Perodua’s marketing people do not regard the Rush as a direct rival since that is aimed at a more family-oriented target group which needs a 7-seater. So if it is not competing with the Rush, then the Nautica is actually in a segment on its own as other 2-row SUVs are larger and cost more with the exception of the Chery Tiggo from China.
The Nautica has a 1.5-litre (1495 cc) DVVT petrol engine with a DOHC, 16-valve aluminium cylinder head and cast iron block. This is the largest engine now offered by Perodua as the Rusa van, which had a 1.6-litre engine, is no longer in production.

The compression ratio of the engine is around 10.0:1 but it is tuned to run on RON92 petrol without problems. In this state of tune, it produces 80 kW/108.8 bhp of power at 6000 rpm and 141 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm. DVVT, the variable valve-timing mechanism, enhances driveability throughout the rev range which, in turn, helps in fuel economy and promotes more complete combustion for less toxic emissions. Only a 4-speed automatic transmission is available but the drivetrain is a full-time 4WD, like the Kembara’s. The use of 4WD in small models is not new in Japan and many of the manufacturers have provided it as a means to improve stability on slippery surfaces like ice and snow, and not for off-road capability. Thus the 4WD in the Nautica is essentially a ‘mild’ system that will come in useful on wet roads and also for casual off-road driving. Don’t expect it to perform like a Toyota Land Cruiser just because it has 4WD and in any case, the Dunlop Grandtrek tyres (215/65R16) are not intended for extreme conditions.

Moving inside the Nautica, it will be immediately evident that it is very different from the Kembara. The earlier SUV was small and the cabin was compact but the Nautica offers a lot more space with its wider body. Those who felt the Kembara’s seating made them too ‘intimate’ with their passengers will be pleased with the extra elbow room and also the larger seats. The driver’s seating position is high, like in the Kembara, something which was a major reason for many people buying the SUV.
Whether the Malaysian public will accept a Perodua that costs RM89,900 remains to be seen and it really depends on the strength of the brand image today. Much has gone into brand building in recent years to try to get away from the cheap image that it started off with and make it a brand of choice. Given the serious and consistent efforts to raise build quality and after-sales service, Perodua has succeeded to some extent.

The Nautica will be a good test of how Malaysians regard Perodua today and besides that, by offering a model at this price will enable the company to more easily adjust its prices later on if and when the government decides to remove all special privileges for national carmakers and their prices will need to be revised upwards.

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is weird. Its body style? Weird. Its engine? Weirder. Its styling? Yep, that's pretty strange too. Since its introduction five years ago, the RX-8 has served as an automotive asterisk.

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is a four-seat coupe with a pair of rear-hinged "suicide" doors that ease access to the backseats. There are four trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring and R3. The base Sport features 18-inch wheels and performance tires, a rear lip spoiler (manual transmission models only), air-conditioning, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, full power accessories and a six-speaker stereo with CD player and auxiliary audio jack. The Touring trim adds a limited-slip rear differential, xenon headlights, foglights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and an in-dash six-CD changer.

The rear-wheel-drive Mazda RX-8 is powered by a 1.3-liter rotary engine. The engine's output depends on the transmission selected. Models with the six-speed automatic (with paddle shifters) receive 212 hp and a redline of 7,500 rpm. The six-speed manual version has 232 hp and an atmospheric redline of 9,000 rpm. All RX-8 engines produce a rather meager 152 pound-feet of torque.

Although generally quick by most measures, acceleration is hardly impressive for a sports car. In our tests, a manual-equipped RX-8 went from zero to 60 mph in 7 seconds. Fuel economy is unimpressive at 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined.

Although the 2009 Mazda RX-8 has the look of a race-tuned sports car, its demeanor on the road is considerably more docile. There's plenty of grip in the corners and solid feedback through the steering wheel, but a compliant ride means that it won't beat you up on the daily commute. The rotary engine requires high engine speeds to make serious power, but the delivery is virtually vibration-free and noise levels are subdued. If you like a smooth engine (in feel, sound and delivery), there's none smoother. Overall, the RX-8 is one of the best examples of a car that's both fun to drive and very livable on a day-to-day basis -- just be prepared to pay at the pump.

FANCY seeing this in your rear view mirror?

That’s a distinct possibility now that the police have taken delivery of 25 units of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Better known as the Evo X in some markets, Mitsubishi’s World Rally Championship-inspired high-performance car is as mean as they come. With a 2.0-litre turbocharged Mivec engine pumping out 295bhp, sports suspension and a tarmac gripping all-wheel drive system, suffice to say that the Lancer Evolution has enough blistering pace and sure-footedness to pin down any throttle-happy felons.

According to the Bukit Aman public relations department, the cars will carry the police livery and be equipped with communications and siren systems, and could be deployed for high-speed pursuits or even as VIP escorts. The police version will be a five-speed manual.

Besides Malaysia, the current Evolution model is also used by the police in Japan and Australia as high-speed interceptors.

Pardon the pun but it’s a copping fast car that the Mat Keretas will have to be on the lookout for now. And it looks like the men in uniform will be having some fun.

The Accord has been fully redesigned for the 2008 model year. This model is bigger than previous Accord models and boasts better engine performance without any loss of fuel efficiency. It's available as a midsize coupe or sedan and a variety of trim levels to suit almost any buyer's needs. Entry-level LX models have the basic necessities while top-line EX-L models feature items like leather upholstery and an optional navigation system. All models come with a fully array of safety equipment, including side curtain airbags and stability control.

As has been the case with the past few generations of the Accord, the newest eighth-generation model comes with either a four-cylinder or V6 engine. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine makes 177 horsepower; an upgraded version of this engine makes 190 hp. For more power, a 268-hp, 3.5-liter V6 is available. The four-cylinder engine has a five-speed manual transmission as standard and a five-speed automatic as optional. The V6 typically comes with a five-speed automatic, though V6-equipped coupes are available with a six-speed manual.

In reviews, we've found the latest Honda Accord continues to excel as a family sedan or midsize coupe. The interior is very roomy and high in quality, though some might take issue with the car's multitude of buttons on the dash. As a response to some Accords of the past, the latest model is a bit sportier to drive. We wouldn't call the Accord a sport sedan exactly, but this newfound agility is a desirable addition to the usual Accord strengths of safety, reliability and comfort.

Japan must be rather big on year-end specials, or is it because of the need to clear stocks? Another Mazda vehicle that gets a limited/special/etc edition treatment is the Mazda Biante, which has two special editions - a Mazda Biante Limited Edition and a Mazda Biante NAVI Special.

The Mazda Biante 20S Limited Edition is based on the 20S but gets extra equipment such as leather on the steering wheel, dual power sliding doors and a keyless entry and start system. The Mazda Biante 20CS Limited Edition is based on the 20CS grade and gets HID headlamps, cleanable seats and leather on the steering wheel.

The Mazda Biante 20 NAVI Special is limited to 800 units and as you can probably guess from its name, adds a navigation system. This takes the previously mentioned Biante 20S Limited Edition with the power doors and etc and adds a Mazda G-BOOK Alpha-compatible HDD navigation system, that also has features such as parking assist with front, side and rear guide monitors, a DVD and CD player, an analog TV tuner with printed antenna, Bluetooth hands-free, and steering-wheel audio controls.

Has anyone seen the Biante in grey import showrooms in Malaysia yet? Given the popularity of the Toyota Alphard, it would seem Malaysians like tall roof MPVs as well.

GM puts Volt engine plant on hold

General Motors, anxiously conserving cash so it can keep operating into 2009, said on Wed it would halt construction of a plant tied to one of its most important projects while the automaker awaits a Washington bailout.

GM said it is putting the brakes on the construction of a factory in Flint, Michigan, set to make 1.4l engines for the Chevrolet Cruze and the Chevy Volt plug-in electric car.

It's just one more effort by GM to hold on to every penny possible as it speeds closer to the day when the 100-year-old industrial giant won't be able to pay its bills.

The company has been scaling back just about everywhere - shutting down vehicle production, ending sports sponsorships, turning off escalators and even cutting back on office supplies - to stay afloat.
GM is seeking up to US$18bil in government loans as it tries to survive the worst US auto sales environment in 26 years. It says it needs US$4bil before this year runs out.

GM board member Kent Kresa told The Associated Press last week that the company might make it into the early part of the first quarter, depending on auto sales, yet GM has several billion dollars worth of supplier payments due shortly after the first of the year, and analysts have said the company probably doesn't have the cash to pay them.

GM announced plans in Sept for the new engine plant in Flint, 50 miles northwest of Detroit, and said production would begin in 2010. But the company is delaying the purchase of big-ticket items needed to build the factory, such as structural steel, spokeswoman Sharon Basel said.

The plant's engines will extend the range of the rechargeable Volt, GM's high-profile next-generation vehicle that will be able to travel 40 miles on electricity alone. They will also power the Cruze, GM's new small car that is supposed to get around 40mpg.

Basel said Volt and Cruze development will continue as scheduled and the company still plans to bring them to showrooms in 2010. The construction delay, she said, may be temporary until the company figures out its cash situation.

"Everything that involves heavy cash outlays obviously is under review," Basel said. "Our intent is to still go forward with a new facility bringing that engine to Flint."

Meanwhile, GM has held off many large expenditures, such as the steel for the Flint plant, Basel said."Those are huge cash outlays, and we don't have the cash," she said.

Basel said there is plenty of time to build the factory, install equipment and get it up and running in time to produce engines for the two new cars. The company already makes the 1.4l engine at a plant in Austria, she said, giving it another option for engines.

"We have lots of options. The construction of the new plant is not going to interrupt our plans for the Volt or Cruze," Basel said.

Work will continue as scheduled on the Lordstown, Ohio, assembly plant, which will make the Cruze starting in mid-2010, said GM spokesman Chris Lee. The company has not formally announced where the Volt will be built, although the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant was identified in the 2007 contract with the United Auto Workers. Lee said Volt production remains on schedule for later in 2010.

GM said in Sept it would invest US$370mil in the new factory, which will employ 330 hourly and salaried workers and allow the company to double its global production of smaller engines by 2011. The plant will have 300 flexible work stations that will let GM build different four-cylinder engines without retooling.

The United Auto Workers union agreed that new hires for the plant would be paid US$14 per hour, about half the wages of a current UAW worker. It also agreed to a new flexible pact with GM that lets workers do multiple jobs.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- The All-New Honda City 1.5 sedan is expected to boost Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd sales in 2009 with 18,000 units targeted to be sold in the first year of its launch despite the current global economic slowdown.

Managing director/chief executive officer, Atsushi Fujimoto, said the company was confident of achieving the target in view of the positive growth in the local motor vehicle market.

"We are looking to sell 1,500 units a month. The market here is much better than in Europe, the US and Japan which are facing a slowdown in their car industry," he told reporters after the launch of City here on Wednesday.

Fujimoto said Malaysia's economy was not badly affected by the current crisis.

"Malaysia has a safe and stable financial system. Honda Malaysia will not call for any retrenchment and cut its operation," he said.

The All-New City model is the third generation Honda City.

It is available in two variants. The City grade S sells at RM84,980 (on-the-road price with insurance) and the grade E at RM89,980.

The grade S offers essential features of the All-New City while the grade E variant offers additional features such as paddle shift, rear reclining seat, rear underseat tray and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The City is powered by the new i-VTEC engine and is the first in the 1.5-litre sedan segment to come with the five-speed automatic gear transmission.

Honda City was first introduced in 1996 in response to the growing needs and want for cars among Asians in tandem with the economic growth in the region.

It has become a strategic model for Honda following the Civic, Accord, CR-V and Jazz, with cumulative sales passing one million units as at late May this year.

Honda Malaysia today unveiled the third-generation Honda City compact sedan in Kuala Lumpur.

The all-new City comes with numerous firsts in its class, combining style, performance and practicality, but more on that as you read on.

There are two variants available, these being tagged Grade E and Grade S. The Grade E comes with additional paddle shifters, rear reclining seats with an underseat tray and 16-inch sport alloy wheels.

Exterior style-wise, the City adopts what Honda calls an ‘Arrowshot Form’ design outlook from end-to-end. Strikingly, the front end resembles a transformable robot from an animated movie, whilst the tail lamps look very much like those found on the BMW 3-Series.

The i-DSI block is history, so the new City goes about its business with a single powerplant choice, this being a newly-developed four-cylinder 1.5l i-VTEC engine which pushes out 120bhp at 6,000rpm and 145Nm of torque at 4,800rpm. Compliant with Euro 4 level emission standards, the City is deemed the most powerful compact sedan in the market to date.
The advanced i-VTEC engine is now mated with a five-speed automatic transmission with Shift Hold Control and is the first in its class. Gone too is the CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) gearbox, an omission brought about by the rougher style of driving encountered here, according to surveys carried out by Honda Japan’s R&D division.

Compensating for the absence of a manual transmission gearbox (a five-speed manual is available in both Thailand and Singapore) are the paddle shifters in the Grade E, which provides the driver with a sportier means of changing gears.

The steering wheel is now of the tilt and telescopic type, and the footrest is now wider as the accelerator and brake pedals have been shifted more to the right. The car comes with EPS (Electric Power Steering), and safety comes in the form of dual SRS airbags and front seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters.

Stopping power is reinforced with ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution), while BA (Brake Assist) amplifies the driver’s foot force with minimal pedal input.

Entertainment for the occupants inside the City is provided by an advanced audio system that is compatible with MP3 players, iPod, USB memory or a mobile hard disk drive. In the Grade E variant, you get a six-speaker system with steering wheel audio controls, while the Grade S makes do with a four-speaker arrangement.

The all-new City does not compromise in rear passenger convenience with a fold-down armrest that also houses integrated cup holders.

Another first in its class, the City’s rear trunk is able to contain a whopping 506l of cargo, which is equivalent to being able to store four nine-inch-wide golf bags.

As mentioned, the Grade E’s rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split configuration for extended luggage carrying capacity, and is fitted with an underseat tray to stow away wet umbrellas or footwear.

There are a total of five colours to choose from – Alabaster Silver Metallic, Bold Beige Metallic, Polished Metal Metallic, and new colours Crystal Black Pearl and Deep Lapis Blue Metallic. Unfortunately, a striking signature colour called Habanero Red Pearl, as well as a very pretty Tafetta White, is not available.

The Honda City is manufactured in Malaysia, with 30% of the parts sourced locally, including the seats and instrument panel, while the rest are from Japan.

According to Atsushi Fujimoto, managing director of Honda Malaysia, the previous City was still doing quite well into the end of its run, having registered a total sales volume of 8,000 units from Jan to Nov this year. With the arrival of the new one, Honda Malaysia is targeting to sell about 1,500 units of the new City on a monthly basis, and pre-launch bookings have been brisk, with more than 1,500 orders to date - as of launch time, the waiting period is a month, though that is surely to change if more orders come about.

The City rolls in at RM84,980 for the Grade S and RM89,980 for the Grade E (both on the road, with insurance) and comes with a three-year warranty or 100,000km and six months free service or 10,000km, whichever comes first.

A Modulo accessories package is available to spruce up the City’s exterior, and this consists of front, side, rear and trunk spoilers, all for an additional RM4,750.

Honda To Quit Formula One, Citing Global Financial Crisis

TOKYO, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- Honda will withdraw from Formula One by the end of this year, citing deteriorating business conditions due to the global financial turmoil and the worldwide economic downturn.

"Near-term uncertainty surrounding the global economy continues to grow and we expect recovery to take some time," President Takeo Fukui of Honda Motor Co., Japan's second-largest automaker, was quoted by Kyodo News Agency as saying Friday.

"It was a very difficult decision," Fukui said.

2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid

The Fusion Hybrid uses an evolution of the powertrain in the Escape Hybrid, and it promises to be the most fuel-efficient mid-size hybrid sedan, besting the hybrid versions of the Chevy Malibu, Saturn Aura, Nissan Altima, and Toyota Camry, while falling short of smaller fuel-sippers like the Honda Civic Hybrid and the Toyota Prius.

Like the hybrid Escape, the Fusion uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, modified to run on the more efficient-but somewhat less powerful-Atkinson cycle. The Fusion, however, has its own specific continuously variable automatic transmission, its own electric motor, and its own lithium ion battery pack. The system's total combined power output is 191 hp, which is enough to provide decent acceleration. Ford says the Fusion Hybrid is able to run in engine-off, pure-EV mode at speeds up to 47 mph, but that doesn't mean the engine only starts up once you reach 48 mph. Trying to accelerate to 47 mph in EV mode would take an eternity (and likely enrage the line of drivers behind you). In truth, engine assistance is needed for all but the most glacial acceleration. But the fuel frugal needn't worry too much that they're slurping the world's oil reserves, since Ford's hybrid system engineers advise that the most economical driving is done by accelerating normally-using the gasoline engine-then backing out of the throttle, getting the car quickly into EV mode. Under those circumstances, yes, you can go as fast as 47 mph without aid of the gasoline engine, depending on the batteries' state of charge. That is, until you encounter an uphill grade.

In order to help would-be hyper-milers, the Fusion Hybrid has its own unique instrument cluster, in which the speedometer is flanked with several LCD color displays that help the driver keep tabs on the unique powertrain and monitor his all-important mpg. One can select from four different settings (called inform, enlighten, engage, and empower) to choose how much info is displayed. The most advanced setting not only shows when you're in EV mode but also how close you are to the threshold, whereby you'll slip out of it and wake the engine. This works far better than a simple EV indicator to help you maximize EV time (and hence fuel economy). For those who do well, another part of the display shows an image of a vine, which grows a bit larger after every three-minute segment in which you're driving efficiently. Stomping on the gas should cause it to wither and die, but that doesn't happen.

Within the Fusion family the Hybrid is its own trim level, perched just above the SEL. Pricing is not yet available, but we expect that the hybrid premium over a four-cylinder SEL will be roughly the same as that of the hybrid Escape, which should put a Fusion Hybrid in the mid-$25,000 range. Sure, at the moment, gas is cheap again, but does anyone think it will stay that way? When prices shoot back up, the $3000 or so extra you'd spend on a hybrid Fusion will likely seem well worth it for this combination of exceptional economy, acceptable performance, and a high degree of livability.

Petrol and diesel down 10 sen

PETALING JAYA: Petrol and diesel prices have been slashed by another 10 sen effective today.

The price of RON97 petrol is now RM1.80, while RON92 is selling at RM1.70 a litre.

The pump price of diesel is now RM1.70 a litre.

In a statement, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the reduction was in line with the drop in global crude oil prices.

The retail prices of petrol and diesel have been gradually lowered from their highs of RM2.70 and RM2.58 respectively in June.

Pan Malaysian Bus Operators Association president Datuk Ashfar Ali said the drop would hardly impact his operational costs.

“The damage is already done. The price of daily necessities and foodstuff have gone up and nobody will reduce their prices.

“Spare parts are still expensive – their prices have not gone down either. And the bulk of the diesel used for our operations is under the fleet card system, where it costs RM1.43 a litre.”

Ashfar suggested that the subsidised diesel enjoyed by bus operators could be reduced by a further 13 sen to RM1.30.

“With the lower global crude oil price, I feel the Government can afford it.”

Pan Malaysian Lorry Owners Association president Er Sui See said with cheaper diesel, lorry operators could consider maintaining transport prices.

“At RM1.70, I think we can sustain the price. Diesel accounts for 35% of our operational costs, and only about half of the operators benefit from the fleet card system.”

Perak Govt Buying Camry To Replace Perdana V6

IPOH, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- The Perak government Friday approved the purchase of 16 Toyota Camry 2.4 cars for official use by its state executive councillors and senior officers to replace its fleet of Proton Perdana V6 said to have worn out. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the decision was made because the repair and maintenance costs of the Proton Perdana cars currently in use were high as the cars were old and had frequent breakdowns.

Speaking to reporters after chairing the state executive council (exco) meeting here, he said the purchase of the new cars costing over RM2 million would be made soonest possible and the Proton Perdana cars then sold off.

The Perak government had at the state assembly sitting on Nov 13, claimed that the previous Barisan Nasional government had spent about RM1.3 million to repair and maintain the official cars of the Menteri Besar and state exco members from 2004 to March 2008.

In another development, Mohammad Nizar said the issuance of permanent land titles to residents of new villages and planned villages was expected to be made before this Dec 25.

He said many applications for the land status had been received from residents.

The state government's move to convert the 99-year leasehold of land to 999-year land ownership title became controversial as it was said to have violated the National Land Code.

The Menteri Besar also reiterated that the state government had issued a directive that all housing projects on hillslopes be stopped until confirmation from the Environmental Impact Assessment reports, Public Works Department and the Minerals and Geoscience Department that the projects were safe.

Avanza gets cosmetic changes

Mitsubishi-based model for Proton confirmed

Proton has announced (through a filing with Bursa Malaysia) that it has signed a Development Agreement to develop a new model with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC), its old partner who helped start up the company and provided the first model platforms. Complementary agreements have also been signed relating to the restyling and modification of the new model as well as manufacturing activities for it.

This confirms rumours that a Mitsubishi-based model is likely to feature among Proton’s future products although the Australian-market Mitsubishi 380 that had been identified earlier, supposedly to replace the Perdana, is definitely not the model. It was deemed too big, especially the powerplant, for this market and was also a failure in Australia.

Instead, the strongest rumours are that the Lancer platform is the one which will be the basis of the new Proton model as it seems to be the only one in the Mitsubishi range which would be suited as a Perdana replacement, if not the Waja. However, it is the 14-year old Perdana that needs a brand new replacement more urgently (the earlier hope of cloning a VW was dashed after the Proton-VW talks ended abruptly) whereas the Waja platform could be re-engineered for a second generation. The flagship Chancellor, a long-wheelbase Waja, which is mainly used by government officials is rather dated too.

If it is a Lancer, then it might be a long wheelbase version although the Licensing Agreement with MMC does stipulate that it will be non-exclusive which means that while the design can be exclusive to Proton, MMC could also use the same jointly-developed model for itself. In fact, this type of collaboration is something which was already being explored 8 years ago with the ill-fated Juara. At that time, the expectation was that Proton would initially clone the mini-MPV model and then progressively re-engineer it into a new generation, whereupon MMC would then buy units manufactured by Proton and put the Mitsubishi badge on them. However, the failure of the Juara in the market ended that venture. Interestingly, MMC did later take a small MPV from another manufacturer; in Indonesia, it buys the Suzuki APV and sells it under its own brand.

The choice of a Lancer could have implications for Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), which is a subsidiary of MMC. While the Lancer is not its bread-and-butter model (the Triton is), the availability of a Proton variant - which would be much cheaper - could reduce demand for the Lancer in future. Thus, it seems more likely that a long-wheelbase variant will be a better move for both manufacturers as the Lancer can continue to be sold by MMM and the longer-wheelbase variant sold as a Perdana by Proton.

No time-frame has been mentioned for the new model launch but given that it would be a ‘cloning exercise’ on a ready-made platform, the development period could be very fast as it would involve mainly bodyshell design. It could turn out to be something similar looking to the Lancer (or whatever model is chosen), the way the original Saga looked like the 1984 Mitsubishi Lancer or it could look very different, like the Waja which is known to sit on a platform that was used for the 1995 Mitsubishi Carisma/Volvo S40.

MMC is certainly keen to collaborate with Proton as it wants to move beyond a CBU-only business in Malaysia. Its past relationship was certainly a successful one, at least till Proton decided it was big enough to stand on its own and ‘suggested’ to MMC that its presence was no longer needed in 2004.

Commenting on the relationship between MMC and Proton during an informal dinner with Malaysian journalists in KL on Thursday night, MMC President Osamu Masuko said that there is a long history between the two companies and Proton engineers are very familiar with Mitsubishi’s philosophy, approach and engineering so there is a good basis to work together. He said there are also close business ties since MMC supplies many parts, transmissions and V6 engines to Proton and the Japanese carmaker is keen to explore further avenues of collaboration.

Mr Masuko confirmed that the earlier Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in February 2006 had expired last year but the two companies still remained in contact to see what else could be done to work together and presumably, this new development is the result of those extended discussions. It also seems that some elements of the earlier MoU have been retained in a new MoU regarding MMC’s assistance to ‘improve both build and component quality for Proton vehicles’.

In Proton’s filing with Bursa, there is also mention of ‘contract assembly’ on which both companies will conduct feasibility studies over the next 3 months. Mr Masuko told journalists that MMC will start Lancer assembly to ASEAN and suggested that this could be done in Thailand but it is entirely possible that the model could also be assembled here at Proton’s Tg. Malim plant which has lots of spare capacity.
Having MMC as a strategic partner suits Proton well since the Malaysian carmaker has been resisting having equity participation by other carmakers, and from Mr Masuko’s remarks, MMC also has no strong desire to get into equity participation. It was in serious financial difficulties in 2005 after Daimler-Chrysler withdrew from its partnership (‘divorced!’, Mr Masuko quickly corrected when this writer tried to use the ‘diplomatic’ phrase) and nearly had to close down its biggest plant. But today, it is much healthier and has an optimistic growth plan charted up till 2010. So it would be happy to work with its old friend in Malaysia in what can be a win-win situation without corporate entanglements.

Police get Lancer Evo

The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has acquired 25 units of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (with manual transmission) which will be used alongside the Proton Wajas and Iswaras as patrolcars. The purchase was rumoured for some time but the PDRM did not officially comment on it and it was thought that the cars might be used for undercover purposes.

High-performance models are nothing new to the PDRM and even as far back as the 1970s, the force had a fleet of 2-litre Alfa Romeo Alfettas, the first police force outside Italy to use the Italian cars. Marketed by City Motors at that time, they were assembled at the Swedish Motor Assemblies plant in Shah Alam, Selangor.

Later on, during the 1980s, the police also purchased a small fleet of Ford TX3s which were used for undercover operations. The cars were unmarked and little was known about them other than that they existed. Around that time, other government agencies like the Customs also used models like the Citroen BX and BMW 318i in order to pursue criminals who had fast machines.

In the 1990s, the Highway Patrol got the powerful Volvo 850 T5 stationwagons which were ideal for use on the North-South Highway. The stationwagons served for some time but today, the Highway Patrol uses Mitsubishi Pajeros, Nissan X-Trails and some Proton Satria GTIs.

The PDRM will be sending its Evo drivers for special training courses so that they will be able to make full use of the car’s performance so illegal racers had better think twice before trying to accelerate away when they see flashing blue lights behind them. The police also say that the cars may have other roles that require high-speed escorts.

As these are government vehicles, the cost would be about half the showroom price of RM324,000 since they are purchased tax-free. Also, the Evo's 295 bhp engine is a thirsty powerplant but since the police also get tax-free petrol, that should not be a worry either!

2009 Subaru FORESTER - Review and Photos

The current Subaru Forester was introduced for the '09 model year. Based on the most recent Impreza, this Forester is larger and offers more ground clearance than its wagonlike predecessor. The result is a compact sport-utility that is decidedly less compact, offering the same type of sizable maximum cargo capacity and interior space available as its principal competitors.

As before, Subaru offers a pair of horizontally opposed boxer four-cylinder engines with all-wheel drive as standard. The 2.5X models feature a naturally aspirated unit that produces 170 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual is standard and a four-speed auto is optional. The XT models get a turbocharged version of this engine that churns out 224 hp and 226 lb-ft of torque. All XT's get the automatic.

The Forester comes in four trim levels: 2.5X, 2.5X Limited, 2.5XT and 2.5XT Limited. The base model is very modestly equipped, but some of the XT's features are available in a Premium Package that includes alloy wheels, sunroof and a reclining rear seatback. The Limited models gain luxury items like leather upholstery, a power driver seat, automatic climate control and an upgraded stereo. They can also be outfitted with an optional navigation system.

As with its previous iterations, the current Subaru Forester is a strong entry in the constantly growing compact SUV segment. Although the four-speed automatic hampers its performance and refinement, this new Forester is nevertheless an impressive entry. With a comfortable cabin, ample cargo space and lots of available equipment, the Forester stands up well to best-selling competitors from Honda and Toyota.

Proton PERDANA Replacement Model (PRM)

Words are spreading around about the new Perdana replacement model. Most likely the new perdana will be based on the Australian made Mitsubishi 380.

The mitsubishi 380 based perdana will be most likely to be a replacement to the current Perdana which is based on the Mitsubishi Eterna. However the Mitsubishi 380,as the name implies, uses a 3.8 liter v6 engine. This is a big no no for malaysian market. With fuel prices shooting up like rockets, it is most likely to be replaced with a smaller engine.

The current perdana uses a 6a12 v6 engine from mitsubishi which produces around 150hp which is suitable for platform which weight only 1300kg. But this engine is not suitable for the new perdana as it weight over 1600kg. Expect a 2.2 or 2.4 with at least 160hp engine to be fitted on this 380 based platform.

However this new model can be quite dissapointing for proton fans as proton start to do rebadging again despite of the few successful,proton made model such as the gen 2,satria neo,persona and the new blm.

Whatever it is,lets cross our finger and hope to see an outstanding new perdana which can outperform most of its competitor such as the Mitsubishi Lancer GT and Honda Civic.

Nissan has been pretty active lately. With the latest being the Grand Livina and the Latio, Nissan recently launched the Sylphy. Seen as the successor of the Altima instead of the Cefiro, the 2.0 engine that comes with the new model boosts a new product line up for Edaran Tan Chong Motor, the Malaysian distributor of Nissan cars.

The name is known to have come from the workd ‘Sylph' and has not been exported much to many countries from Japan , which makes Malaysia the only country assembling the model here. one of the spokesman for Edaran Tan Chong announced that “Normally, a CKD model will have differences from the Japanese Domestic Model (JDM) to suit local requirements and also to cater for localization. With the Sylphy, this approach was not taken at the outset because of the limited volume. It also helps a lot that the Free Trade Agreement with Japan was signed in time for us to get the CKD parts much cheaper since the import duties have been virtually abolished. Nevertheless, we do intend to localize certain parts as time goes on since it can cut costs further,”

The engine power of the Sylphy is boosted by the CVT (Continously Variable Transmission) which comes with the XTRONIC which is an automatic transmission without gears. This computes to a very efficient fuel consumption which as rpoerted claims that the Sylphy drinks 16 kilometers per litre. Standard equipments include the ABS +EBD+Brake Assist, where ventilated brake discs are used at the front while in the read are drum breaks in within some 15 inch allow rims in a 195/65 tyres.

Interior wise, the Sylphy provides an ambience alike the ‘living room'. It is larger than Teana and definitely impress those who are impressed with the Latio. There are two main packages provided for by Tan Chong Motors, namely the Comfort and Luxury Packages respectively which costs RM112,800 and RM116,800 respectively, with the latter coming with leather upholstery, MP3 and a 6-CD audio changer.

New Honda technology to improve fuel efficiency

Debuting in next year's Insight Honda's clean machine is set to get a host of efficiency improving gadgets too.

A car is only as clean as its driver, that is the thinking behind Honda’s forthcoming Drive Assist dashboard.

Using a trio of functions, the new system aims to improve its users driving style, resulting in lower emissions and increased efficiency.

The three new technologies are headed by an ECON Mode which controls engine transmission for more fuel-efficient driving.

There’s a more advanced version of the guidance system currently available in the new Civic, which illuminates the speedometer in colours ranging from green to blue depending on how efficiently you are using the gas pedal.

And to provide an overall summary of the trip, there’s a scoring function which displays up to ten leaves depending on how efficiently you have driven. Honda's aim is to make "the hybrid experience more fun and rewarding". There is also a bar which displays your lifetime score.

The new ECO system is due to debut in Honda’s Insight hybrid, out next spring.

Proton launches Persona in Middle East

Proton has launched its Persona into the Middle Eastern market - the model was launched both in Saudi Arabia on Nov 22 and Egypt on Nov 24. The Gen2 model was also launched in Egypt. This will be followed by a series of launches in Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Syria market over the next two months.

Proton entered the Saudi market in 2006 when it introduced the Waja model via a smart partnership collaboration with local outfit Al Rashed Al Thunayan Auto Co.

As for Egypt, the company first launched the Waja and Wira models in 2001 and in 2006 brought in the Gen.2 hatchback, with Alpha Ezz Elarab Co being its distributor in the country.

Mitsubishi i MIEV coming to KL

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia will be showcasing the i MIEV electric car at the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) from Dec 3-5 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The IPTC is considered to be be one of the foremost technical conferences globally for the energy industry, and issues tackled are in the areas of energy conservation, climate change and alternative energy. Over 4,000 participants from around the world are expected to attend the conference.

MMM hopes that through the showcase of the i MIEV plug-in electric vehicle, it will promote greater appreciation for the superior practicality and environmental viability of such vehicles. The i MiEV’s lithium-ion pack will also be on display.
The battery, which takes about approximately seven hours to be charged using 200V current, gives the i MiEV a 160km range and a top speed of 130kmh.

The i MiEV is slated to be launched in Japan next year; presently, Mitsubishi is conducting fleet tests in cooperation with several Japanese electric power companies.

As the redesigned 2009 Ford F-150 pickup starts rolling into dealerships, Ford marketing executives are eschewing those elaborate TV commercials in which trucks swing by their tow hooks in giant centrifuges, race through gantlets of flying steel pendulums or chatter their brakes to the edge of a precipice while trying to stop a 10,000-pound trailer.

They do need a little updating. Can we see how many unsold copies of the new Guns 'N Roses album "Chinese Democracy" the new F-150 can hold? (Not nearly enough.) Can we see a truck grinding up Pike's Peak pulling a trailer full of deposed congressmen stacked like cordwood? Can two Ford pickups tug Madonna's face any tighter?

A $100 bill weighs 1 gram. The new F-150 has class-leading hauling capacity of 3,030 pounds. It would take a fleet of 181 F-150s to transport $25 billion in bailout money from the nation's capital to Dearborn, Mich. I'll help drive.

I guess these are inauspicious days to launch a pickup. The light-vehicle market has gone China Syndrome; the chief executives of the Detroit Three are groveling in their pinstripes on Capitol Hill; and there is, in the air, a diffuse but real sense of repudiation toward full-size pickups. The F-150, perennially the bestselling vehicle in America, has fallen on hard times. Sales are down 26% this year, and Ford will be lucky to move 500,000 F-150s this year, down from about 700,000 in 2006.

Nearly gone are the high-riding carbon cowboys in their shiny pickups, the all-hat poseurs, the "never-never" buyers (never tow, never haul). Pickup trucks have an ideology and that ideology is conservative, Red State Republicanism.

Pickups just lost the White House.

Yes, Dearborn has its troubles but this is the best pickup truck on God's little acre. Yes, the Japanese have beaten up on the domestics, but Toyota and Nissan only wish they knew how to build a full-sizer as tight, as tough, as well-sorted, as keen and mean as the thing behind the Blue Oval. I mean, people, it isn't even close.

My Car of the Year is a truck.

I don't own a gun rack and I'd like to shoot Toby Keith out of the nearest cannon, so a pickup truck has to go a long way to blow my mind. What the Ford does is simply exceed expectations by a few degrees in every category.

It rides a little more smoothly. It's a little quieter. It's more agile in day-to-day driving and more of a draft horse when you need it to haul or tow. It's better equipped. When you add all those margins up, the Ford is vastly better than anything else in its class.

Take, for example, its bronze-bell solidity. Ford isn't the only truck maker to use hydro-formed, fully boxed high-strength frame rails in the chassis. But it might be the only one that laser-welds the roof seams and body side panels to the truck's superstructure.

Compared with robotic spot-welding, seam welding essentially turns the various welded parts into a single piece of steel. The resulting sense of foundry casting isn't something you can exactly measure, or even describe. You slam the door and nothing trembles or rattles. You mat the throttle on the open highway and what you hear in the cabin is a deep, pleasant timbre. Between the fancy engine mounts, the clever tuning of bushings and chassis mounts, and acres of sound deadening, the F-150 has the noise-vibration harshness of a luxury car.

The pickup proprieties have been observed. Three cab styles, four box styles and seven trim levels are available, including the new Platinum series (electronics galore, 20-inch chrome wheels, brushed alloy trims in the cabin, power-deployable running boards, heated/cooled seats, and loads of mirror-polished metal). The F-150 XL regular cab starts at $21,320, while a loaded Platinum series SuperCrew 4x4 will approach $50,000.

Three V-8 engines are offered: a 5.4-liter three-valve (320 horsepower); a 4.6-liter three-valve (292 hp); and a 4.6-liter two-valve (248 hp). Mileage is up across the line. The 5.4-liter, backed by a six-speed automatic, returns 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, largely thanks to the new six-speed automatic (the 2008 F-150 got 14/17 mpg). Ford is also offering something called the Superior Fuel Economy package that, with the help of a friendlier rear-axle ratio and low-rolling-resistance tires, gets 15/21 mpg in city and highway driving, respectively.

Three quick hits:

* The SuperCrew (four-door) configuration is 6 inches longer in wheelbase and overall length, and that extra room is used to enlarge the rear doors and rear cabin. With the rear seat flipped up, the truck has 57.6 cubic feet of enclosed cargo space -- more than a lot of mid-size sport utility vehicles or wagons. The rear seating is the size of a squash court.

* Ford rules the cargo box: Among the many fun features are a deployable side step (to help reach inside the truck); a fold-out tailgate step with assist handle; and a set of slide-out tool trays or drawers built into the lower quarter panel.

Also, Ford is offering a package called Work Solutions. Designed for the truck-based entrepreneur, the system offers high-speed Internet access, navigation, fleet tracking and PC programs such as Microsoft Excel and Word, all built into the dash-mounted LCD display. With a wireless keyboard and printer, you can type out and print invoices right there in the client's driveway.

The system also includes Tool Link: You can put radio-frequency identity (RFID) tags on your tools, and the truck will electronically inventory them every time you start the engine and remind you if a tool is missing. Also handy is a heavy-duty, self-spooling cable lock that keeps tools from walking off.

* Trailering: The F-150 is rated for 11,300 pounds of towing, which is 600 pounds more than a comparable Chevy 1500. Stability control is standard, as is trailer-sway control (the system will null out uncontrolled oscillations in the trailer using selective braking).

Integrated trailer-brake control is also offered, replacing those clunky plug-in modules that you install under the dash. In my half-day test drive, towing a 5,000-pound box of something, the trailer-braking action was far smoother and more integrated than that provided by the usual auxiliary modules. Another option: a reverse camera. Don't back up in the Whole Foods parking lot without it.

Aesthetic and athletic, with tremendous build quality and dozens of fall-in-love features, the F-150 refutes the easy dismissal of American automaking as somehow feckless and inefficient. These days, selling lots of pickups may be harder than swinging in a giant centrifuge or jumping lakes of fire. But I do believe the F-150 will survive just fine.

Mitsubishi Australia has formally announced that the turbocharged, AWD "Baby Evo" is now available from dealerships nationwide. We already told you about the Ralliart's mechanical specs before, so we won't repeat ourselves here. What we will say, however, is that for just $42,490 for either sedan or Sportback the Lancer Ralliart makes a solid case for itself as a mid-range sportscar with loads of potential.

Sure, it might be a couple of G's pricier than its nemesis the Subaru WRX, but it comes with Mitsubishi's excellent TC-SST double-clutch gearbox as standard and is but a turbo swap and a re-tune away from churning out Evolution X levels of power.

It's also reasonably opulent for a Lancer too, with Aussie-spec Ralliarts receiving aluminium pedals, leather trimmed steering wheel and gearshifter, power windows, Smart Key central locking, climate control and automatic headlights and wipers. A 9-speaker Rockford Fosgate stereo system is optional, as is a sunroof. Make mine a white Sportback, please.

British mag Auto Express has come to the fore with what appears to be the first peek beneath the upcoming successor to the legendary NA2 NSX. AE's cutaway appears to be very similar to an allegedly genuine rendering that they published months ago, so this may very well be the real deal.

There's not much to see other than a very Corvette-like intake plumbing arrangement for the NSX's 600hp naturally-aspirated V10 and an interior that appears to be just as cramped as that of an S2000. Like all good supercars, the front suspension is a bona-fide double-wishbone type and we don't see any driveshafts leading into those front hubs, so it's probably safe to say that those rumours of an AWD NSX are just that: rumours.

The new Honda Insight has broken cover at the Paris auto show.The new hybrid vehicle revives the Insight nameplate formerly applied to the two-seat hybrid vehicle that inaugurated the gas-electric class in the United States in the late 1990s. It also bears a distinct resemblance to that other hybrid you might have heard of, and that's a battle set to take place in U.S. showrooms early next year.

Honda says the Insight's shape bears the hallmarks of its larger, fuel-cell-powered FCX Clarity, but it's hard not to see some echoes of the Toyota Prius in its greenhouse--though the front end is quite Civic-like in its appearance. The new Insight seats five, Honda says, and the rear seats fold for improved cargo access.

The important innovation in the new Insight is a much less complex, much more affordable hybrid drivetrain, the company says. It will allow the Insight to be sold for a price significantly lower than today's hybrids, Honda says. The automaker expects to sell 200,000 of the vehicles each year worldwide, with 100,000 heading to the United States from its Suzuka, Japan, factory. Combined with a production version of the CR-Z coupe hybrid concept, the new family of hybrids could swell to 500,000 sales annually.

This concept car was one of the nice surprises at this year’s Los Angeles Show; the Honda FC Sport is a hydrogen-powered three-seat sports car concept that took everyone by surprise on press day.

Using the fuel-cell technology first seen in the Honda FCX Clarity, the Honda FC moves the fuel cell stack, battery pack and electric motor to the mid-engine position for ultimate dynamic behaviour. Peer through the rear window and you can see the two fuel storage tanks that sit on top of all the mechanicals, just like you do on a Ferrari F430. The car boasts a central driving position, with a passenger seat positioned on either side to make it a three seater.

The Honda FC Sport was designed at Honda’s Advanced Design Studio in Pasadena, California, with the original idea being to create the basis for an ultimate Honda sports car that would use existing fuel cell technology. Looks like they succeeded in spectacular fashion in our eyes, lets just hope we see it produced one day.

Honda is fast-establishing itself as a key player in future technologies, with cars that appeal to us as much as those wanting to save the planet - just look at the OSM and CR-Z from recent motor shows.

The new RX350 (there might be a 3-litre engine for some markets) and RX450h hybrid have improved powertrains. The RX 450h gets an enhanced Hybrid Drive system with a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine which delivers a total system output of 295 bhp, 27 bhp more than the powerplant in the RX hybrid before.

The RX 450h can be ordered with front-wheel or electronically-driven, part-time all-wheel-drive (AWD) which supplies the rear wheels with the optimal amount of torque as conditions demand. Unlike mechanical AWD systems that reduce fuel efficiency due to added weight and friction, the RX 450h's rear-mounted electric motor-generator allows all four wheels to perform regenerative braking, charging the hybrid battery more effectively.

The new RX 350 has an improved 275-bhp 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine mated to an electrically controlled, sequential-shift 6-speed transaxle. The AWD version has an Active Torque Control AWD system that optimizes torque depending on driving conditions, resulting in improved efficiency and performance.

The suspension has a new, uniquely designed double-wishbone rear suspension said to provide exceptional agility and control. To complement this new rear suspension and provide excellent dexterity and ride comfort, the front MacPherson strut geometry has been optimized.
The new RX offers a number of Lexus-first technologies that are intended to enhance the ownership experience. Customers can order a Hard Disk Drive-based navigation system with a "Remote Touch" controller that is both intuitive and ergonomic. Positioned on the centre console, it is as natural to the driver's hand as a computer mouse. While the RX will feature voice recognition as standard, the new navigation system will also include a new casual language voice-recognition system that acknowledges conversational commands.

The spacious 5-passenger interior includes a new "dual-zone cockpit" design. This intuitive layout helps the driver navigate the advanced interior of the new RX, which features two distinct yet integrated zones: a "display zone" and an "operation zone." The "display zone" assists the driver via an 8-inch, navigation display that is set back in the dash for improved visibility. A white Organic LED multi-informational display ensures exceptional readability from a wide angle. An optional Heads-up Display is also available and its high-intensity LEDs make the display bright enough to be read in direct sunlight. The "operation zone" provides access and control to a large range of information through the available "Remote Touch" navigation controller and the steering-wheel-mounted multi-information switch.

In a period of just ten years, nearly one million copies of the Nissan Cube have been sold (mainly in Japan), the iconic “cubic” styling having been one of the reasons for its popularity. Now the third generation has arrived, destined for a more global market (deliveries start in Japan next week and other markets will have their launch from early 2009).

The latest version maintains the distinctive exterior styling that is instantly recognizable as the Cube, such as the asymmetric rear end, while pursuing a simpler, more universal design for its debut on the world stage. It is said to offer greater comfort, a larger cabin and a host of innovative interior details. Despite its increased roominess, the new Cube remains less than four metres long, providing big utility within a small physical footprint.

"The new Cube is designed for people who imagine a life less ordinary, who have grown tired of the never-ending pursuit of faster, more powerful, more outrageously styled cars," said Yosuke Iwasa, Segment Chief Product Specialist. "The quieter, more harmonious qualities of the Cube have attracted interest not only from young people, but for those in every walk of life. While carrying forward the concept of the original Cube, this latest edition has advanced significantly, including offering far greater comfort."

"The new Cube is a refined car of universal quality and appeal, that can compete without 'makeup' or excessive decoration," added Seiji Watanabe, Associate Product Chief Designer. "The development concept took the approach of 'purifying' the Cube design, rather than "evolving' it. A jagged rock, for instance, loses its edges and takes on a polish as it travels down a river. This is the sort of refinement we wanted for the new Cube. We worked to simplify its exterior, using fewer lines and widening certain areas. We allowed the Cube design to refine itself, moving closer to nature and suggesting human warmth. The resulting 'purer, more peaceful' design is just what we wanted. It is a vehicle for people who are not being influenced by others, who go their own way, and enjoy interactions with friends in a welcoming atmosphere."

Some of the interesting features in the new Cube include a "skylight"-style glass panel roof that keeps the sky always visible from the driver's seat, and a shoji-style shade to diffuse sunlight, when desired, and fill the cabin with gentle light. Comfortable, secure seating with thick seat cushions and matching door armrests give a sofa-like effect while a "water drop" ripple design motif is used for the cupholders and other cabin details.

The platform design minimizes mechanical space, including for the engine, transmission and suspension, and creates a roomy cabin and easy handling in an attractive, compact package. A wide stance, resulting from moving the wheels to the corners, allows for sharp cornering and a turning radius of just 4.6 metres. A more rigid body (than the previous generation) allows for more stable operation and a comfortable ride with the strut front suspension and torsion I-beam rear suspension.

The new Cube has an all-aluminium 1.5-litre HR15DE petrol engine and all Cubes come with the e-4WD system that has a standard XTRONIC CVT with Adaptive Shift Control. The new model is said to have better aerodynamics that improve fuel-efficiency by 2% in the high-speed range (compared with the previous Cube).

Prices in Japan range from 1,449,000 yen (about RM53,900) to 1,928,850 yen (RM71,753). While it would be nice to see the new Cube in Nissan showrooms in Malaysia, its high price after Malaysian import and excise duties are paid would make it less appealing, just as what has happened with the March. Unfortunately, the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Japan only provides for reduced import duties for models with engines larger than 2.5 litres so the Cube doesn’t qualify. But don’t worry, before long, you’ll see ‘used’ units being privately imported and having more ‘appealing’ prices.

The 2008 Honda Civic Si is already a pretty cool little sedan, and lots of fun to drive. So when Honda teamed up with Mugen to produce 1000 special 2008 Honda Civic Si Mugen sedans, the internet was abuzzin'. I got a chance to spend a week with a Mugen tuner car, and I lived to tell the tale.

In Japanese, "Mugen" means "without limit," and it's the name of the tuner company co-founded by Sochiro Honda's son Hirotoshi in 1973. Mugen specializes in souping up Honda cars for the track and street, and they've been very successful in their home market. Mugen parts are available in the US, but this is the first time that a co-branded Mugen vehicle has been brought out by Honda.

The Mugen Si shares most of its mechanical underpinnings with the standard Si. The Mugen elements focus on suspension, exhaust, body modifications and some cosmetics. Inside, there's not much to distinguish the Mugen from a stock Si. There are a few badges, a Mugen shift knob and drilled aluminum pedals to elevate the atmosphere, and of course there's that bisected rear view, with the big wing out back.

The Si interior is a very good one, luckily, and it didn't need much tweaking to work as a tuner car anyway. First off, the seats are firm and supportive, with excellent side bolstering to keep you in place when cornering. The dash is very high-tech looking, with a digital speedometer tucked at the top of the instrument panel and a big rotary analog tachometer taking center stage. Keep that tachometer in mind -- it becomes very important when we start to talk about actually driving the Mugen.

The Mugen is powered by the same 2.0 liter inline four-cylinder engine that propels the stock Si. The 16-valve double-overhead cam unit produces 197 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque -- not all that impressive until you look further into the figures. Horsepower doesn't peak until 7800 rpm; torque until 6100 rpm. That means that in order to get the most out of the Mugen, you have to really rev it up and use that big tach to make sure that you're running in the powerband. The engine isn't shy about letting you know when it's happy. There's a spike in power as you approach the peak. It almost feels like a turbocharger kicks in, the spike is so strong. If you shift the six-speed manual gearbox later than you would on most cars, you get great rushes of acceleration from the Mugen. A freer flowing exhaust system rewards you with incredible music from the engine, and a happy feeling follows.

TCMA invested 67 million US dollars for the new plant and has fully implemented the Nissan Production Way (NPW) which is Nissan’s international standard for global quality manufacturing and vehicle assembly.

“Today, we are very excited to introduce the 1st non-national CKD medium-size MPV in the 1.6 Liter & 1.8 Liter segment. Like the Tin Man in "The Wizard of Oz," a body of metal is nothing without a heart. Thankfully, the 2009 Toyota RAV4 -- when fitted with the optional V6 -- has plenty of heart, thanks to 269 horsepower, potent acceleration and a modest appetite for fuel. In fact, this V6 gets about the same fuel economy as some four-cylinder-equipped competitors.

Standard features for the base RAV4 include 16-inch steel wheels (17-inch alloys are optional), full power accessories, keyless entry, cruise control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel and a six-speaker stereo with a CD/MP3 player and an auxiliary audio jack. The Sport adds 18-inch alloy wheels, rear tinted windows, a sport-tuned suspension, foglights, heated side mirrors and several exterior details. The range-topping Limited trim includes 17-inch wheels for a smoother ride, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and an in-dash six-CD changer with satellite radio (optional on the two lower trims).

The 2009 RAV4 comes standard with a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder that delivers a healthy 179 hp and 172 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission is standard. Optional on all trim levels and coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission is a 3.5-liter V6 that produces an impressive 269 hp and 246 lb-ft of torque. In performance testing, the RAV4 V6 4WD delivered a very quick 0-60 time of 7.2 seconds.

All RAV4s can be equipped with either front-wheel or four-wheel drive. Front-drive models have a limited-slip differential. In 4WD models, the electronic 4WD system sends most of the power to the front wheels until slippage is detected, at which point power is also sent to the rear wheels. Unlike many competing vehicles, the RAV4 offers a true 4WD lock feature that fixes the front/rear power split 50/50, which is useful for driving in snow and light off-roading.
The EPA estimates a four-cylinder, front-drive RAV4 gets 22 mpg in the city/28 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg combined. The 4WD model has a 21/27/24 mpg rating. The V6 gets virtually the same fuel economy as four-cylinder crossovers, with 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined ratings for the front-drive version. Four-wheel drive results in a loss of only 1 mpg on the highway.

The seat structures are based on the WIL (Whiplash Impact Lessening) concept, providing stronger seat frames and possessing greater backrest give, and were designed based on analyses using THUMS (Total Human Model for Safety), incorporating structural design that reduces stress on the neck during low-speed impacts from the rear.

All front-wheel-drive vehicles in the series achieve emission levels 75% lower than the 2005 standards under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Approval System for Low-emission Vehicles, and boast fuel efficiency that exceeds by 5% the level called for by the Japanese 2010 fuel efficiency standards.

LCA (Life-cycle Assessment) was also carried out, aiming at reductions of CO2 and other atmospheric pollutants, not just during the use stage, but also during the entire lifecycle of the Ractis, from manufacture through to disposal.

A review of the materials, processing methods and adhesives used for interior parts in the Ractis resulted in a reduction in the amount of volatile organic compounds used, and, thus, a reduction in the discomforting odors emitted from such compounds.

Welcab: Specially equipped vehicles with factory-installed features for disabled people

Wheelchair-adapted models (Type I, Type II) can load and unload wheelchairs, and can accommodate one wheelchair and three passengers. For the first time in Japan, Type II specifications position a wheelchair behind the front passenger seat within reach of the driver—in case the driver needs to administer any care. Welcabs are manufactured on the same production lines as the base vehicles, which keeps costs down.

The Welcab Lift-up Front Passenger Seat model (Type A, Type B) and Welcab Rotating and Sliding Passenger Seat model (Type A, Type B) are designed to make use easier for elderly and disabled passengers.

Is this what the new Toyota Prius will look like? Accoridng to a Toyota forum, where this and other photos of this familiar-looking hatch appeared, the car here before you is the production version of the next generation Prius, scheduled for an official debut in January 2009.

If true indeed, then, at least stylistically, the upcoming iteration of Toyota's foremost hybrid falls short of greatness. Despite a sharper roofline and a more aggressive front end, the car looks somewhat dull and generic. That is to say that if Toyota wanted to churn out a Matrix look-alike, it succeeded admirably. However, if the goal was to effectively compete against the looming rival Honda Insight, then this new design is way off mark. Of course, this is just one car guy's opinion and you are more than welcome to voice yours in the comments section below.

The latest model by Mitsubishi is the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport SUV 2008. The new Pajero Sport will be phased in selected regions such as Russia, the ASEAN area, the Middle East, Latin America and Oceania starting in the fall this year. Means this SUV is going to be in Malaysia soon.

The new design have some of the idea of Mitsubishi Triton if you can see. With a redesigned front grill, rear trunk, and more dynamic lines… For the rest, we’ll have to wait until the end of September for more pictures of this new SUV.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation will unveil its new Pajero Sport SUV model at the Moscow Auto Salon 2008 (The Moscow Motor Show) to be held at the Crocus Expo in Moscow between August 26 and September 7 (opens to the public on August 29).

The model will be named differently such as Montero Sport in South America, Nativa in Latin America and Challenger in Australia.

The new Pajero Sport features dynamic and sporty exterior lines, complemented by a stylish and vast interior space that engenders a sense of comfort, purpose and safety. This cabin, available in either a 2-row (5-passenger) or 3-row (7-passenger) seating configuration is also very practical with water-repellent seats and a waterproof luggage compartment floor, ideal for leisure use.

Mitsubishi’s latest SUV will be powered by a choice of three engines which all deliver outstanding motive performance and fuel economy: 2.5-liter and 3.2-liter common rail direct injection diesel units and a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline unit.

The new model of Mitsubishi Pajero will use the Super Select 4WD system, also used in the Pajero SUV, which transmits drive torque effectively to all four wheels on all types of surface. The body, frame and driveline not only give Pajero Sport outstanding off-road performance but allow it to deliver excellent drive dynamics over all surfaces.

In terms of architecture, the body of the New Pajero Sport is mounted on a new ladder frame to realize high levels of durability and reliability, consistent with the needs of its target markets.

When asked why the Myvi SE does not also have performance upgrades, eg a more powerful engine, Perodua MD Datuk Syed Abdull Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar said that their market surveys have told them that the majority of customers are mainly interested in cosmetic features and many will spend quite a lot of money on bodykits.

“So we feel that if this is what our customers also like, then we will meet their demands,” he said.

For the new Myvi SE, the first identifier is the ‘hero colour’ which is Tangerine Orange. It’s new to the Myvi and if you don’t like it, you can also have your Myvi SE in Ivory White (non-metallic), Ebony Black, Glittering Silver or Pearl White (special metallic finish with extra charge).
From the pictures, you should be able to see what’s new but in case you miss them, this is the full list: new bumper design with integrated foglamp, ‘black-out’ headlamp units, wide rear roof spoiler, smoked clear rear lighting units, new rear bumper design, and a special surface treatment for the alloy rims (14 inches with 175/65 tyres).

The interior is a dark shade with leather upholstery for the seats and steering wheel wrapping. The audio system is a 2-DIN type (which means you can change the head unit without too much hassle) and the CD player has MP3/WMA capability and you can also connect a USB stick as well as use the Bluetooth interface.

Unique to the New Myvi SE is the red-themed Optitron instrument panel, certainly adding a sporty touch to the interior (especially at night). Red and orange illumination are actually good for night driving as the colour does not affect the eyes so much, which is why aircraft instrument panels use amber or red illumination.

The enhancements that the New Myvi SE carries are basically aesthetic. It still runs on the same 1.3-liter unit producing 86 ponies at 6,000rpm and 116Nm of torque at 3,200rpm and to keep the ponies under control, Perodua has entrusted the same set-up of steel discs up front and drum brakes at the back.

The second generation of the Nissan Murano crossover SUV goes on sale in Japan this week and the fact that it looks rather like the first generation is said to be because the designers wanted to carry over a strong sense of "Murano-ness" from the previous design as part of a "super evolution".

Like the previous generation, the new Murano has a dynamic body design that is highlighted by elegant flowing surfaces and curves. The silhouette stretches like one seamless motion from the aggressive front bumper to the rear bumper. In front, quad-cylinder style High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional headlights are integrated with the wide front signature Murano grille. 3D concave surface body sides provide a beautiful contrast with the sculpted fenders, while the unique window silhouette - with the rear edge heading upward - provides another example of the new generation design's "Murano-ness."

The first production batch of the new multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) by Proton Holdings Bhd is set to roll out of the factory on Sept. 12, said managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir yesterday evening at an analysts' briefing.

The first units of the MPV would be used for safety testing and road durability for certification purposes ahead of the model's scheduled launch in March next year.

While the exact specifications have yet to be disclosed, it is understood that Proton is aiming to price its latest model around the RM75,000 range, excluding accessories, road tax and insurance.

The chassis for the MPV is a new platform that would be used for variants to be developed over the next few years but the engine will be the 1.6-litre CamPro that is currently fitted into the Gen-2 models. The seven-seater will have 15-inch tyres as a standard fit, with either automatic or manual transmissions.

The public would be invited to submit possible names for the MPV in a contest that Proton intends to launch next month. During testing over the next few months, alert members of the public could probably spot the new MPV being driven on the roads around the country.

On other models, Syed Zainal said the new Saga has become the fastest selling Proton model ever, chalking up over 80,000 bookings since its official launch in January this year.

He admitted that the overwhelming response has caused some delays in deliveries, with only some 40,000 cars registered so far. However, Proton has ramped up its production lines to output 7,500 cars from next month compared to 4,500 units originally produced on a monthly basis.

On the Persona model launched last August, he said that over 55,000 units had been booked so far.

Looking forward, Syed Zainal said that Proton would be looking to develop a CamPro turbo engine and also a diesel engine by next year to provide more alternatives to customers.
With this range of model options, Proton aims to boost its exports such that about 70 per cent of its revenue would come from overseas sales by 2016.

Perodua will launch a new three row 6-seater MPV in September 2009. Datuk Hafiz likened it to a Toyota Wish, but a smaller version. I wonder what could this be based on. Can’t really think of any compact 6-seaters from Daihatsu/Toyota other than the Daihatsu Gran Max, but that’s more of a Rusa-like van.

Anyway whatever it is, it’s something to look forward to next year. 2009 seems to be the year of the MPVs.

Toyota engines have been leading the way in terms of refinement and efficiency of late, and this is set to continue with the use of new dual VVT-i engines in the new model. The Altis has the same 1.8L VVT-i engine as that of an existing Corolla model, tweaked ECU and fuel injection system, improved emission conformity and better fuel efficiency.

The dual VVT-i engines take Toyota's cam shaft variation one step further, allowing independent cam shaft variation for both intake and exhaust timing using one electro-hydraulic variation system for each of the cam shafts. The new 3rd generation Honda City which went on sale in Thailand in mid-September this year. The first official release on the new model gives a hint as to the theme the new City will have – style and performance joining practicality. This is only to be expected since the previous City (still on sale here) was strong on practicality but until the facelift last year, its looks were not appealing to some and the performance also left something to be desired, allowing the Vios to score more points in these areas.

Now Honda has addressed those deficiencies and at the same time, gone further, with the new City. Besides the new 120 ps 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine (same as in the new Jazz), the new City also comes with a long list of sensible and useful features.

According to Honda Malaysia, buyers can expect a top-notch multi-format compatible audio system as standard. The ‘revolutionary Advanced Audio’ digital media system is compatible with iPod and mp3 players as well as other sources of digital audio sound for the convenience of the driver and passengers. In addition, all major operations, such as song selection and volume adjustment, are controlled using four push buttons and a rotary selector similar to the Jog Dial function on an iPod. The display panel features a large LCD for improved visibility even from the rear seats.

Interior spaciousness and comfort, thanks to the extended wheelbase, are claimed to be greatly improved in the new City. To enhance seating comfort, special attention has been paid to the shape of the side bolsters and the hardness of the seat cushion padding. The springs and cushion padding were also specially contoured so that the passenger’s lower back sinks into the seat cushion and is held in place. At the back, the convenient one-step 60/40 folding and reclining backrests allows the boot space to be extended for loading of long or tall items. The rear headrests have also been integrated into the backseats for better rearward visibility. Developed for the best balance between maximum capacity and practical usage, the boot capacity is at an impressive 506 litres, which should swallow up a lot of luggage.

The new City features unique spaces such as the open-type tray beneath the rear seat. This allows passengers to store their umbrellas and an extra pair of shoes for rainy days. No mention is made of the highly innovative ULTRA seat being present in the new model, though. The glovebox and coin pocket are now larger, which allows passengers to store more things.

Globally, the new City has already been launched in three countries - Thailand, India and Singapore – and Malaysia will get the model by mid-December 2008. When it was launched in Thailand, over 8,000 units were booked within the first month and this was a new record for Honda in Thailand as it broke the previous high of 6,000 bookings in the first month of the launch of the Civic in 2005.

The Civic Hybrid has Honda’s CVT known as Multimatic S, which is the same as before. There are claims of improved operating efficiency with a wide ratio strategy employed for the higher gears. The increased torque has required an increase in clutch capacity too.

As befits the Civic Hybrid, there are some items in and around the car to distinguish it from the normal Civic. The instrument panel has the same design but there is the IMA meter which tells the driver when the hybrid system is running on the petrol engine and when the battery is getting recharged. There is also a real-time fuel consumption meter adjacent to the digital speedometer.

Driving the Civic Hybrid is not much different in feel from the normal Civic, though the strong acceleration is noticeable. If the driver is not informed of the powertrain, he might actually think he is in the 1.8-litre Civic, which says a lot about the Honda Hybrid System because the engine it uses has a 1.3-litre displacement. The handling characteristics are fairly similar too but subjectively, the new Civic Hybrid feels less sporty than the new Toyota Prius which this writer also had a chance to drive before.

The IMA system consists of an ultra-thin DC brushless electric motor mounted between the engine and the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) drivetrain; this provides additional torque and power by engaging during vehicle acceleration. At low speed cruising (about 40kmh), the motor solely powers the vehicle.

All the electric power created by the motor is stored in a compact battery box called the Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) - consisting of a rear-mounted compact nickel metal hydride battery and power control unit - which controls the flow of electricity to and from the electric motor. Recharging takes place when braking, slowing down or traveling downhill; battery life is claimed to be about five to seven years.

TOKYO — Honda has released an all-new fourth-generation Odyssey in Japan. The new model — a completely different model from the one sold in the United States — is altogether lower and sleeker and has a hard-earned reputation for being Japan's best-handling minivan.

The new Odyssey builds on the success of the low-rider minivan Honda introduced for Japan in 2003. It's the same basic formula but with a redesign that has a much "greener" attitude. Styling includes a front-end design clearly inspired by Honda's FCX Clarity fuel-cell sedan. Underneath, the Odyssey sits on an evolved platform with updated four-wheel double wishbone suspension and optional four-wheel drive. Honda added about an inch to overall length and stretched the three-row cabin to create more space. As before, the Odyssey's dazzling, sci-fi dashboard is a techno freak's delight.

Honda's 2.4-liter, four cylinder i-VTEC unit is the only engine choice. True to Honda form, although it's a carryover, it has more power and better economy than the version it replaces at 171 horsepower — or as much as 203 hp in the sportier top-of-the-line Odyssey Absolute. Honda claims fuel economy that leads the class in Japan, at the equivalent of 31.1 mpg. The Odyssey also has a new Econ mode that increases fuel mileage through combined control of the air-conditioner and continuously variable transmission to reduce engine load.

The new Odyssey also gets an array of high-tech goodies including a new multi-view surround camera system that lets you see all around, and over, the car from the driver seat.

With so much versatility and driving fun, why not pick a 6? The four- and six-cylinder engines have never been particularly powerful in this class, and newer competitors have made these modest motors seem like Calista Flockhart duking it out on "American Gladiators." The Nissan Altima, Honda Accord and Toyota Camry all offer at least 270-horsepower V6 engines, while at the same time bettering the 212-hp Mazda's fuel economy. The base four-cylinder is pretty much the same story, although the power gap isn't as significant. In this era of gas mileage awareness, less power and higher consumption is a tough sell.

An all-new Mazda 6 will debut next year that will hopefully address the power, fuel economy and rear seat space issues. In the meantime, though, if you can look past the current model's downsides, the 2008 Mazda 6 is still an attractive choice. If buying something other than the Camry-Accord-Altima status quo is appealing, then the 6 should definitely be considered -- especially if a "fun to drive" demeanor is a top priority.

All 2008 Mazda 6 models are front-wheel drive. Standard on the i model is a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that makes 156 hp and 154 pound-feet of torque. The s model upgrades to a 3.0-liter V6 that makes 212 hp and 197 lb-ft. The Sport trim level comes only with a five-speed manual, while the Sport Value Edition offers a five-speed automatic. The Touring and Grand Touring trims are only available with a six-speed automatic. The Mazda 6 s will run to 60 mph in about 8 seconds flat, which is respectable, but at least a second off the pace of the segment speedsters.

The new Honda Stream (body codes: RN6/RN8) is offered internationally in two specification levels. The lower-end spec will feature the R18A 1.8 liter SOHC i-VTEC (2-stage) engine with a 5-speed automatic gearbox (and a 5-speed manual transmission in some countries). The higher-end spec called the Stream RS-Z will feature the R20A 2.0 liter DOHC i-VTEC (3-stage) engine equipped with a CVT transmission and 7 speeds paddle shift function (tiptronic).

The new Honda Stream MPV, which replaces the older homonymous model since July 14 in Japan, has been at last officially announced. The restyled version features much more aggressive and mature appearance and also makes some family resemblance with current Honda Odyssey JDM.

The 1.8-liter engine's maximum power output reaches 140 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. The power is being transferred to the wheels via a five-speed automatic gearbox. The 2.0-liter engine features up to 150 hp and maximum torque of 140 lb-ft and is mated to a CVT transmission with torque converter in FWD configuration, or a five-speed automatic on 4WD vehicles.

Honda Jazz, new for 2008, is revealed with a whole new definition of compact spaciousness. The Jazz, known in some markets as the Fit, came into the market in 2001 and introduced a funkier, more practical dimension to the small car market. Such was the adoration Jazz received that it won Car of the Year in Japan and South Africa soon after. More of an evolution in design than a revolution, Jazz has grown in size. The new car retains most of the old car’s good parts, such as the magic seats that dive down with one action as well as the underfloor storage.

Under the bonnet, modifications are more dramatic. While the current Jazz has 1.2 or 1.4-litre petrol power, the newcomer will get a choice of a 1.3-litre unit generating 99bhp, or a 1.5-litre engine producing 118bhp.

Both engines feature Honda’s latest i-VTEC variable valve timing technology, and manual or CVT auto gearboxes are available with both. Honda claims that the 1.3-litre will return 68mpg, while the 1.5 will deliver 55mpg. The company refuses to confirm whether an oil-burner is in the pipeline, but our sources insist one will be added to the range.

Making others nervous is the new Nissan NAVARA, a really big, bad MOTHER TRUCKER. A totally pumped up truck with rugged good looks, leather interior and the mightiest engine in its class to date.

The Nissan NAVARA Double Cab became available in Malaysia on November 5, 2008. It is available with a 2.5L diesel engine producing 128 kW (172 hp) and 403 N·m (297 ft·lbf). Unlike the Frontier which came with a 5-speed manual only, the new Nissan Navara will come with a 5-speed automatic transmission with an easy rotary switch for shifting between 2WD and 4WD modes. 2H and 4H modes can be shifted on the fly at speeds of under 100km/h. You will likely have to stop to switch into the low-ratio 4L mode, but the rotary switch makes it easier than a shift lever.

The new Toyota Alphard (shown at right) is longer, wider and roomier than the outgoing version. Its slightly lower roofline (by 45mm) is offset by a cabin floor that's been lowered 55 mm, so the new van actually boasts more cabin height even though it's not quite as tall as its predecessor. Power comes from either a 170 PS (167 hp) 2.4L four or a 280 PS (276 hp) 3.5L V6 driving the front wheels. In August, a 4WD variant will join the lineup.

While Toyota's press release acknowledges that the new models are a bit spacier and safer than the old one, it neatly ignores the fact that the Alphard Hybrid has been quietly dropped. This could well be the first such occurrence for the company and given the number of eggs Toyota currently has in the hybrid basket, its no surprise that its PR department is doing its best to gloss over the retirement.

The all-new Caldina of September 2002 is a pure sports wagon, and does not share body panels with Allion, Premio, and Avensis. Engines for the Caldina are 1.8 L 1ZZ-FE, 2.0 L 1AZ-FSE, or 2.0 L turbo 3S-GTE. Trim levels are 1.8 X, 1.8 Z, 2.0 Z, 2.0 ZT, and 2.0 GT-Four (the later is coded ST246). All models have automatic transmission. Minor refresh was given in January 2005. With the discontinuation of Celica, the Caldina was one of sportiest Toyota models sold in Japan.

Caldina GT4 is also widely available as imported recondition cars in Malaysia.
Production of the 3rd generation Caldina ended in 2007. That was also the end for both the renowned 3S-GTE engine and the legendary "GT-Four" moniker in Toyota's lineup.

Revealed in late 2007, the 2009 GT-R marks the revival of an iconic nameplate for Nissan. The car is powered by a 3.8L twin-turbo V6, good for 480 horsepower and 434 ft-lb of torque.

The only transmission that will be available in the GT-R is a GR6 dual-clutch six-speed. The GT-R's powertrain is reportedly good for a zero to 60 time of 3.5 seconds, a quarter mile time of only 11.7 seconds and a top speed of 192 mph.

In addition, recent reports indicate the GT-R lapped the Nurburgring's Nordschleife in 7 min 35 seconds - placing it in some pretty elite company. That time trails the Pagani Zonda F by two seconds and the Koenigsegg CCR by one, but the GT-R lapped the track faster than a Mercedes SLR McLaren (7 min 40 sec), Porsche 911 Turbo (7 min 40 sec) and the Corvette Z06 (7 min 42 sec).

GT-R's hybrid body construction combines steel, carbon fiber and die-cast aluminum, and features a low coefficient of drag of 0.27, while achieving high front and rear downforce.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X
The 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X is entirely new and based on the similarly redesigned 2008 Lancer compact sedan. As before, it's a high-performance version, with a potent turbocharged engine, all-wheel drive and related upgrades to improve handling and braking. The Evolution X, however, is meant to be more refined and accessible to a wider range of buyers. It starts with the new Lancer platform; a slightly longer wheelbase and a much stiffer body structure give the 2008 Evolution a more substantial feel. The Evolution also benefits from the Lancer's sharper exterior styling, improved interior and new entertainment and safety features.

The Evolution traces its roots to Mitsubishi's World Rally Championship program, and has long since achieved cult status among hard-core driving enthusiasts around the world. The term evolution has traditionally been used in rallying to describe the latest generation rally car. In Europe, rally cars are the ultimate hot rods. Here, the Evo is a compact sedan that beats up on serious sports cars.

The Evo X is based on the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer, which goes on sale in March 2007. As such, it's a bit less boxy than its predecessors, though slightly larger in most dimensions. The Evo X boasts some subtle styling tweaks, of course: a giant hood scoop, oversized fenders and the trademark rear wing. High-tech LED turn signals are imbedded in the side mirrors.

Underneath the flashy body, the Evo X will be loaded with the latest in running gear. The engine remains a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, but it's all new, and much lighter than the previous version. It's also mounted lower in the car to lower the center of gravity. Just the thing for fast gravel stages. (We're inquiring about a long-term test car.) Mitsubishi has not released production figures, but we'll predict at least 300 pound-feet of torque and 300 horsepower, give or take 10.

The Evo X will feature a new six-speed automated manual transmission. While it offers a fully automatic mode, it's not a conventional automatic with a torque converter. Rather, it's more like a manual with a clutch that operates electrically, like those in Ferraris and other exotic machines. This transmission can be shifted with magnesium levers on the steering column. Buyers who prefer a conventional manual with clutch pedal can choose a five-speed. In rallying, strong, close-ratio gearboxes are often harder to get than powerful engines.

The drive system is as trick as they come. Called Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC), this fulltime four-wheel system integrates electronic stability control and an active rear differential. The Evo X gets forged aluminum suspension components, rather than the stamped steel parts on a standard Lancer. Its suspension will no doubt be much firmer. Yet Mitsubishi engineers say they've focused on making the Evo more comfortable and less demanding for everyday use.

Because the integrated body/chassis is much stiffer than before, the engineers say they have actually softened the suspension settings, allowing a more comfortable ride without losing the response or handling enthusiast drivers expect.

Inside, the Evo X will offer firmer bucket seats with huge bolsters to keep occupants firmly in place. Unfortunately, the suede-like Alcantara dash inserts and neon trim inside Concept X won't make the production version. Yet keeping with the daily driver theme, the Evo X will offer more creature comforts than ever, including Mitsubishi's 650-watt Rockford-Fosgate audio system, a touch-screen navigation system, Bluetooth cell phone interface, steering wheel audio controls and an automatic climate control system. The only thing we couldn't find on the list was a co-driver.

Like the upcoming 2008 Lancer, the Evo X will offer passive safety features that set a new class benchmark: front seat-mounted side-impact air bags, curtain-style head protection airbags front and rear, and a driver's knee-protection airbag.

2008 Honda Civic Type R

Speed. Control. Perfection. That's always been the driving force behind the car. And that's why the new Civic Type R is a true driver's car. Rated the best in its class, the Civic Type R boasts sophisticated engineering and superb handling, even at high speeds. (At times, you might even be tempted to think it runs on adrenaline.)

Key features include the high performance high revving K20A 2.0 liter normally aspirated engine found in the Europrean Civic Type R hatch mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, a torque-sensitive helical LSD, large 18 inch wheels providing a peek at the huge 17 inch disc brakes with 4-pot Brembo calipers behind them, as well as a sporty bodykit. The bodykit includes a new bonnet design with a more prominent dome. Suspension has also been tuned for sporty performance and features thicker stabilizer bars.
Immediately noticeable on the Type R are the numerous body modifications. Between the front fascia, carved out to allow the 2.0-liter deeper breaths, and the rear diffuser hanging below the rear bumper, the Type R wears a unique hood, tweaked front fenders, new sill extensions, lightweight wheels, and a taller spoiler. Honda claims functional aerodynamic gains from the package, which is relatively tasteful until your eyes reach the spoiler. The interior is likewise decorated with Type R cues, with heavily bolstered seats, a leather-wrapped ovoid steering wheel, a short-throw shifter capped with a bare aluminum ball, metal pedals, and a racy starter button.

If the Type R were merely a cosmetic package, we wouldn't have been driving it back-to-back with the S2000. Beneath the restyled hood beats the modified 2.0-liter, with improved breathing and a higher compression ratio helping to make those 221 horsepower at 8000 rpm plus 159 pound-feet of torque at 6100, just beyond the VTEC switchover. These figures trail the S2000's by only 16 horsepower and 3 pound-feet. The redline is 8600 rpm, and a close-ratio six-speed keeps the engine spinning in the rowdiest part of the power band.

Revised springs and dampers and fatter anti-roll bars keep this most-entertaining Civic flat, while grip is handled by the Bridgestone Potenza RE070s—the same tires as those worn by the S2000 CR—and huge discs clamped by Brembo calipers bring things to a halt in a hurry.
